Factors to Consider When Buying Vehicle Insurance Online
by John Carlucci - July 3, 2022

The convenience of not leaving the comfort of your home and getting important things done like paying bills, getting important work done, and ordering unnecessary things from online shopping websites delivered right to your doorstep. This is all possible thanks to the internet. But this convenience cuts both ways. The moment making online purchases becomes possible, so does the rise of online scams, frauds, and a lot of different issues.

When you are renewing your auto insurance online or sifting through the different options, deciding to purchase the perfect vehicle insurance online, you could be exposed to a lot of risks. Not just risks, but there are many tips you can follow to save a lot of money and get a brilliant auto insurance policy. Here are all the important factors to consider when buying vehicle insurance online and saving money.

Compare Prices. It’s Easier Than Ever!

The greatest benefit of being able to buy an auto insurance policy online is not online payment. That you can do over the phone. It’s actually the ease at which you can compare dozens of auto insurance policies, compare their prices, coverage, availability, extra features, and a lot more.

What’s even better is that you are not limited to choosing just one or two insurance companies. For example, let’s say that you live in Texas and are not looking for large auto insurance companies, then you can just search for the best and most affordable Car Insurance in Texas and get the best auto insurance options.

The best feature of this comparison is you can have a side-by-side comparison of all the different features of different auto insurance companies. So before you buy anything, spend a decent amount of time comparing prices and features.

Don’t Share Sensitive Information

For people who are not that technologically savvy, or perhaps making online purchases is not your forte, you might wanna be extra cautious and careful while purchasing anything online, let alone auto insurance policies. Here are a few things you need to be careful about:

-        Auto insurance companies or any of their representatives will never ask for any sensitive data. This includes banking passwords, email passwords, credit card information, or asking you to install any software on your computer. If you get a call from an insurance company asking for any sensitive information (or asking you to install some software on your computer), it is better to cut the call and save yourself from fraud.

-        For people making an online auto insurance purchase, make sure that the website is the official website of the insurance company. If you are unsure about it, then contact the insurance company and let them guide you.

Get Multiple Insurance Policy from the Same Company

If there are multiple drivers and cars in your household, then consider getting multiple insurance policies from the same company. Of course, this would reduce the overall cost of the policies but there’s one more great benefit that’s often overlooked; convenience.

Managing different auto insurance policies can be challenging if they are from different companies. You have to make separate payments, remember multiple account information, etc. Getting multiple auto insurance policies from the same company also lets you manage different policies from a single dashboard. You can even make a combined payment for paying the insurance premium for multiple policies.

So find a great auto insurance company that offers what suits your needs the best and get multiple policies for your family.

Add-ons and Upsells

There’s one thing you need to be very careful about when buying auto insurance online. Keep an eye on the add-ons and the extra policies “added” to your cart just before you make the payment.

Add-ons are a great way of enhancing the functionality of your auto insurance policy and making it fitter for your needs. But if you don’t need them, then it’s just a waste of money. What’s worse is many insurance companies automatically add some extra add-on features such as roadside assistance, etc right before you make the purchase. So make sure you check your order details and the price before putting in your credit card information.

Consider Pay-Per-Mile Insurance Coverage

If you don’t drive your car too often, or perhaps you are looking for an auto insurance policy for your secondary car that will hardly smell the tarmac, then perhaps getting a general auto insurance policy would not be a great option. You’d end up paying a lot more and getting a lot less.

A better option to consider would be pay-per-mile auto insurance. As the name suggests, this type of policy only charges you for the miles you drive. Since the more you drive, the higher the risk of getting in a car accident, pay-per-mile, or usage-based auto insurance puts your mileage as the biggest factor in deciding the cost of auto insurance.

A base rate is calculated based on your driving record and other factors. At the end of the month, this base rate is multiplied by your car’s mileage to calculate the cost of your auto insurance. It can only save you money if you drive less than 600-800 miles every year. If your mileage exceeds this number, then stick with general auto insurance.

Keep Every Document Safely

Convenience brings carelessness. When you buy or renew auto insurance online, everything happens digitally. This means that you also get the receipt of payment and other important documents electronically. The chances of forgetting about these documents’ location or keeping them properly are extremely high for online purchases.

So instead of just downloading receipts and other important documents relating to your auto insurance policy, make a folder just to store all the documents of your auto insurance policy and keep them safe.
