Things to Remember If You’re Building a New Office

Things to Remember If You’re Building a New Office
by John Carlucci - March 9, 2023

Every entrepreneur dreams of owning a space for their own business. It becomes a space for them and the rest of the team to grow, create new ideas, innovate, and become a successful venture. It takes some time to reach that point where you can finance your dream project, but when you do, you know it must look brilliant. Building an office is challenging; it requires imagination and decision-making.

The pandemic has already changed how companies want their offices to look. There’s an emphasis on building dynamic workspaces that can adapt to employees’ needs. However, it’s 2022, and there are several other ideas to explore before you decide on your dream office design. Keep on reading to learn more.

It should reflect your business’ vision.

The one thing that you must keep in mind when designing your office is to ensure that the space closely resembles your business ideals and beliefs. Remember that daily, dozens of employees will come to work, so they should feel motivated by the aesthetics of the space.

When speaking with your construction team, ask them how the design of the office can best reflect your company’s identity. You can create a solid blueprint by combining your ideas and their skills.

It should be at an ideal location.

Choosing the right location for your office is integral. It depends on the industry you’re in. For instance, if you’re an e-retail company, it would be best to be situated at a location closer to the airport, making shipping services easier and more convenient.

Find a spot that makes commuting easier for your employees. It should be easily reachable as you might have clients and customers coming to meet you.

Its layout should allow maximum efficiency.

Another crucial aspect to consider when designing the blueprint is how it can add value to the overall efficiency of the organization. Keeping it simple is always the best strategy; having designated areas and location for all the departments are key to increasing productivity. Keep the floor plan functional.

It should be accessible.

According to The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), your office should comply with the regulations that make a space office-friendly. You will have employees, clients, and customers with disabilities who shouldn’t feel discriminated against. Make your space accessible by adding ramps, elevators, and either audio or braille instructions for the visually impaired.

It should have several common spaces.

To maximize productivity, your office should have common areas where employees can conduct ad-hoc meetings informally. Not only is it more comfortable, but it also brings a sense of community among the people.

If you have a bigger budget, add a small cafeteria or a gym. With these added advantages, employees will enjoy coming to work.

Another thing that you should remember is to create relaxing break rooms. It should be a place where employees can take a quick break from their work and unwind. Make it spacious and open so that employees feel free to move around.

It should be sustainable.

Take a step towards sustainability and make your office a “green” space. You could consult with experts from the construction firm and find ways in which you can make your office more environmentally friendly. You can ask them to use sustainable building materials. Initiatives like using power-saving appliances and lights will also add to your journey to sustainability.

What should you do before construction begins?

Building an office from the ground up is a long process. It will take months, or even a few years, for the project to finish. So, the first thing you need to do is to figure out your financing. Speak to your bank regarding loans, and get your investors and shareholders involved.

Secondly, get your land surveyed and checked. A land surveyor will be able to tell you if the ground and soil are suitable for construction. Then, choose a contractor as soon as possible. The faster you pick your contractor, the quicker they can get onto planning the construction. With their guidance, you can get a commercial building permit. Keep all documents ready so that the process can be initiated promptly.

With your contractors, get multiple bids on electrical and wiring work, plumbing, painters, and more. This will allow you to choose the one that fits your budget and provides a great price point.

Most importantly, be prepared for potential delays and setbacks. Construction takes time, so be patient during the process.

Wrapping Up

Constructing an office is no cakewalk. So, team up with the best contractors and designers, communicate your ideas and vision, and they’ll help you translate them into something incredible.
